In-line editing in views
In-line editing on objects is coming in Winter 08 which is great but makes me hunger for more.
How about inline editing in views? You could create a view and maybe under the view preference select (Available for inline editing) and any field in the view could than be edited inline with the same mechanism as on an object. This would be very helpful in situations like Opportunity views where you could easily update the close date of a few opportunities without having to edit each one. |

How about inline editing on reports? That would be epic.

Agreed, totally useful, in fact I thought I had put up an Idea like this too! I've made a number of custom buttons on the View page that at least let you edit picklists on Objects the same way you can change owners or status, but that is pretty limited. As usual, I'll probably end up building a custom page just in time for Sf to announce that the feature will be released (another case of pre-inventing the wheel for me)!

My users are dying to see XLS type editing. This is put in that direction.

I naively thought that was what "in line" meant. In line editing of forms is of pretty limited benefit to me - you still have to open the form. From a view you click on the item, or you click edit, then edit it either way. So what? In line editing of a set of records in a view.... now that would actually make peoples' lives easier. |
|
kylefreem 11/21/07 |
This is a huge idea. Being able to edit from a list view would be really times, as there are numerous cases where you start from a list view and only need to modify one field. This field could be made available in the list view and save TONS of clicks and allow the user to just follow the list view. In-line editing for just a form is nice, but about 10% as useful as in-line editing of a list view would be. |

This is a must have function, because this enables salesforce.com to do powerful manual mass updates. We are implementing a lot of functions in other systems, because salesforce.com does not allow fast canges of a lot of datasets. You always have to click multiple times before you can change a value |
|

I strongly support this idea. The master-detail relationship from a form to related lists is really rather crude in the current setup. Editing individual related list items on a completely separate page with zero (native) visibility to master information or other list items is unimpressive to put it kindly. The reference to XLS style editing is an excellent example. How long ago would MS Excel have been forgotten if each spreadsheet line had to be edited by calling up a separate form page. |

I am DYING to be able to edit a report right from that page. It is ablsolutly rediclous that we have to use to Excel Connector to make mass changes to data. It is such a pain to keep up an excel spreadsheet when I am constiantly added and removing contacts from the list. |
|
packet8 12/12/07 |
Tell me when it is set up for Reports because then I wouldn't have to download an excel report in the morning to work all day, just to finally save in CSV at the end of the day to upload and overwrite my leads that I've made edits to.....this is the only other way to be so productive and edit mass leads/opps |

in line editing of list views or reports would be awesome. I think Netsuite has been doing this for years |

This would be a great addition to the SFDC application. I would also love to see where the user could select several objects with a check and be able to change one field vaule to be updated to a new value at once. We have an older tool that they could select multiple opportunities then change the close dates to be moved out to a new value that is a few weeks out. This worked great for them to keep low visability to accounts that were not ready to be viewed on reports reviewed by higher management. |

Please. If you make it work for views, do it for reports too. And, vice-versa. |
|
tom_fee Jan 25 |
This would be excellent. Other CRM packages do this. This would make data clean up extremely fast and easy. |
|
crislin74 Jan 30 |
It would be great to see this option available on the user detail pages. That way if a user's phone number or job title changes, it would be easier to update. This could work well in tandem with a clone button for User setup. |

allowing In Line editing on views would really help everyone in my organisation (especially the sales men who are notoriously bad at keeping records up to date). please please please add this funcionality sooner rather than later!! |
|

This would extremely useful. I suspect it might not be possible to edit every field displayed in a View, but as many as possible would be great. They would have to consider Dependent Picklists, Validation Rules, Field Level Security, etc. Could the Product Manager responsible for this chime in and let us know his thoughts? |
|
panda23 Feb 7 |
Great idea. Today I often export report details, let users edit in Excel, and upload again. Inline editing in views and report would would be a huge time saver. |
|
cheesesarnie Feb 9 |
Really useful idea. Would help salesforce too - probably half the pages I visit on salesforce I never wanted to see in the first place! They are simply ones I have to pass through as I to-and-fro between lists and items to edit. Salesforce: Just think how much traffic you could save on your servers!! |

Update data for multiple records at the same time
Native support to update data in bulk for a set of records is critical. I often need to update a specific field on a group of records to the same value. Right now you need to go record by record or use Apex Loader. This feature is available for status or owner currently, but not for any other fields.
Please offer the ability to bulk update the same value on a field for all selected records in a view or report. The image above is an example of how this might happen in a view: 1. Enter or select a value for each column as applicable 2. Select which records to update 3. Press the command button to update This feature would be nice for data in a report as well. |

Yes you are correct, I need also to update mass opportunities, the current mass updater that I have, does not work properly, any ideas why.

Hey everyone - Eric here (user experience product manager at salesforce.com). I'm going through a bunch of ideas today and ran across a few ideas that I thought were very similar. While you might think that inline editing on lists and mass updating records might be two different things, I look at both tasks as really accomplishing the same goal: the ability to edit records from a list, regardless of how many records are involved. All great suggestions given above, so I might just be contacting you to find out more information on your specific use cases. Stay tuned for some good news on this new consolidated idea. :-) |

I love this idea! I accidentally clicked on "demote," sorry :( |
|
uboat316 Feb 16 |
I think having functionality similar to Excel, Google Spreadsheet, Edit Grid, so you can use features like Auto-fill would really enhance the usability of list views. |
|
tz Feb 19 |
Very good idea. This woudl help a lot to easily update or correct data. |
|
rpr2 Feb 21 |
GlennAtAppirio - and anyone else who has accidentally clicked on the Demote button ... You may want to vote on this idea: http://ideas.salesforce.com/article/show/102988/Move_location_of_Idea_Exchang...< currently doesn't have many votes, but I just read two different comments in the last 5 minutes about people clicking demote when they meant to click promote. |

Just use the Excel Connector. |

I think that this new feature http://blogs.salesforce.com/features/2008/01/list-view-build.html will make this possible. That link seems to indicate that the feature is already live, but it's not. Any Salesforce employees care to explain what's going on there? To "newleaders" comment: that's a heck of a shortsighted response. The problem, obviously, is not that there aren't other ways to edit data. This idea is about making it easy, and end-users don't find using an Excel tool easier than double-clicking right in the view. |
|
Jakester Feb 29 |
Oops - I take back the first part of that statement - I think I mis-read the description of the new feature, which is why I thought it wasn't live yet. I guess it is live, but it doesn't give us in-line editing for views. |

I'm working on an app right now that really needs the ability to edit and create new records in a list (or xls, or grid ...) view. The ideal interface for this particular app has a parent in one section and a related and editable list in a second section. Clicking "new" in the list section adds another editable row to the list. I don't require the parent-child relationship, but the ability to edit and create records in list view is critical and would be VERY welcome addition to the native custom object. |

Yes,this would save our Company time and clicks. We post much data that then needs adjustments later, Great idea! This will save so much time! PLEASE MAKE THIS CHANGE ASAP "thank you" |

Very good idea. Please go for it. |

Jakester Apr 14 |
chets, you're a bit late. See that "Coming in Summer 08" status - that means they don't need any more convincing - it's on its way. |
|
njdevilsfan Apr 15 |
Will this allow us to edit any field or are there going to be "special" fields that we can't edit? I'm really hoping to be able to edit the Opportunity stage from a list view. |
|
Always_Thinkin Apr 17 |
Sounds like Visualforce will also provide a way to achieve this if you're willing to take the time to set up such a page. |
