Blank spaces in Page Layout

A number of times I have been requested to line up fields horizontally with each other. This can only be done if there are fields above the desired horizontal line up. I propose that SFDC make blank fields available to be added to page layouts so that the placement of fields is more flexible.

I think the picture explains what I want better than I could in words.

C-Stance_Joel 10/08/07	I also run into this issue and the best work around I have found is to just use multiple sections and uncheck the boxes next to the "Show Section Heading on Detail Page:" and "Show Section Heading on Edit Page:" preferences. It is a bit of a pain if you have many things that need lining up but if it is just a few, no problem. Joel
Scott_Jorgensen 10/08/07	Joel has the right idea: just create a section, choose to not display the title, and put your fields into it that you want lined-up.
bio-rad_sandbox 10/09/07	Wow, that section trick is good to know, but also sounds like a pain. It also would clutter the page layout screen. The suggestion on this idea is a much better solution.
Greg_Altonji 10/12/07	I use the sections method as well. I think the resulting layout is a bit cleaner because you don't have those lines separating fields in blank space. It looks like a field is missing. I wouldn't mind having the ability to specify 3 columns in a section though.
Dreambuilder 10/14/07	I use the section trick as well and it works fine. Visualforce should eliminate the need for all of this and allow things like three columns, etc.

amoldalvi 10/27/07	Another trick (workaround) is to use a blank custom s-control. Remember to set the background color in the body tag of the s-control; and I have found setting a height of 15 pixels for the s-control on the page layout is about the right size. SteveBower 10/28/07	However, allowing the selection of a blank field to put into a page layout is brilliantly simple and far more intuitive that dealing with sections w/ hidden titles, or goofy s-controls. This is a nice, simple, easy to use feature. Joe Bob Briggs gives it two thumbs up!
alliforce 11/08/07	I simply wish Salesforce would offer more flexible features to customize page layouts all together; for placement of fields, custom links, etc. I get very frustrated with the limitations and the balance of a page layout with with a variety of field types, i.e. picklist, multi-selects, checkboxes all on one page. I would suggest a more flexible drag and drop, ifit could some how be implemented.

jfxk Jan 2	The S_Control suggestion would require a separate, dummy s-control for each and every line that you wanted to block out, if I understand this correctly. The Title section trick is clever but it really does clutter up the page layout. Salesforce should implement this.

sandrags Jan 5	My goal as a consultant is to keep everything as simple as possible, using native Salesforce as much as possible so the client does not have to rely on programmer-types (I've been one) for maintenance and changes. So while the idea of VisualForce is appealing, it adds just another layer of complexity to the app. I use the Section method, but it is cumbersome and limited. I've even used some read-only check boxes with an almost invisible field name, for example, a period, to put vertical spaces. Alliforce has the right idea, and I would add 1) the ability to have more than 2 columns and 2) the ability to add some additional colors, which can really enhance the readability of the screen.

drdan Jan 10	Why do something that makes this much since, when you could spend time to do a work around? As cleaver as the work arounds are I vote for this idea!
ta_invisible Jan 11	Another note on the section trick workaround is that it can't be used to create a full blank line all the way across the page - only half the page. Implement this idea, please!
TheBoot Jan 11	I agree with Sandrags on keeping it to the native SF functionality. It's not an issue that I have dealt with latey, but I remember my great frustration when I initially implemented SF that I could not have 3 columns...especially when there were 3 colums on the Important Links section. It seems like if they can have it there, why can I not have it in other places if I want?
dbeaudoin Jan 24	I have tried the s-control method, but it doesn't display on the Edit Screen of the Object defeating the purpose of inserting a blank field. I currently use the Section Method and have come up with a way to make a Field appear blank to normal users if the Section Method doesn't meet all of your needs. Create your fields with the following naming convention: Name: <font>BLANK1 Type: Text Length: 1 Access: Read-Only All you have to do is adjust the HTML Color Tag to match the background color of the Object you are deploying it on.

atsdatajunkie Feb 22	Thank you for upgrading the status! This is just one of several changes we need to page layout. (The 3 column idea is another must, as is the ability to place - and format - "free text" on the page layout.)

cribis Mar 5	A trick I have found is to create a new section and hide the headings. This makes the backend cluttered, but it is quick and dirty.
bioscience_man Mar 7	I thought this was coming in the Spring 08 release and I was so excited about it. Well, obviously it did not happen. I think this is an excellent idea and should be very simple item for Salesforce programmers to make reality. Can we expect it for Summer 08 release?
jshumaker Apr 22	Usually i see some feedback from salesforce reps as to why this might not work, it sounds pretty simple to me and most GUI configurations allow for empty "cells"/"spaces".
