De-activate (NOT DELETE) Picklist Values

Thanks to a very aggressive marketing team, we have a long list of lead sources. We have a couple hundred values in that picklist.

Without losing the ability to report on all lead sources, we would still like to clean up our list. I would like to be able to deactivate or remove a value from a picklist without deleting it.

Scott_Jorgensen 09/26/07	If I understand what you're staying, salesforce.com already works the way you describe. To "de-activate" a picklist value you "delete" it in the setup area. When you do this, all of your records that have that value will continue to have that value. As a result, you can still report on those values. If that's not what you want, maybe you could provide some more details on what's missing?
ta_invisible 11/09/07	Scott, the problem comes in reporting with "equals". Once you have deleted a picklist value, if you use that value in a filter criteria with the "equals" parameter, you get an error that prevents the report from running (can't recall exactly what the error is right now, but it's something like "invalid picklist value").
kaplan 08/20/08	I think it would be handy to be able to deactivate picklist values, rather than deleting them when making an update. I would feel safer de-activating a picklist value, as I am worried that it would delete the old data attached, and that I wouldn't be able to find (or remember the names of) those old records, or report on the past data. For example I am updating a custom field that captures the reason a sale is lost, and while deleting old values works, you can't pick these up in the criteria section of a report anymore as they do not exist as picklist values (although the data still does in the system).
