"Send SMS" button (text message)

There should be a button next to "Send Email" marked "Send SMS" that can be used to send an SMS text message to a Contact using their Mobile phone number. Currently the only way to send text messages to people is using a mobile phone, and then re-typing the message into Salesforce to document it. It would be much more efficient to send SMS messages from Salesforce itself, as the message only needs to be typed once, and it's easier and faster to type a message on a computer keyboard than on a phone keypad.

Basic SMS messages are addressed directly to a mobile phone number. Most U.S. carriers now allow sending to mobile phone numbers of other carriers. Most phones and carriers also support sending SMS from a phone directly to an email address. It would be helpful to have the ability to "Send SMS" to a Contact/Lead on the Apex Mobile menu, just below "Place a Call" and "Send Email". Its omission is a step down from standard Blackberry functionality.

The full web interface for Salesfore will benefit greatly from including a facility to "Send SMS" alongside "Send Email". I believe the licensing to do this is difficult in the US, but in most countries in the world it is easy to extend a CRM system to send SMS messages. Using a Send SMS facility we can then send SMS messages to contacts and keep a record in Salesforce. Why would we use a mobile/cell phone to do this and lose the ability to keep a record of the sent message? Plus it's much easier to type SMS messages on a keyboard rather than a phone.
04/9/2007_16:54 Apr 21	We operate in a B2C environment where our prospects increasingly prefer to communicate via alternative techology mechanisms like SMS (texting) and Chatting (IM). Please incorporate this functionality into the salesforce.com product.
