Allow data in related lists to be totalled

It would be great to be able to total selected fields in the related lists. As shown above, we raise invoice requests for our sold opportuntities using a custom object. It would make everyone's lives easier if we could total the value of the invoices, if only to check against the opportunity amount.

twigdncr 07/05/07	Something related that I would find useful is if you could also sum fields that are filled. For example, how many Call Date fields are filled in out of the contacts that are associated with an account? The sum would show that 7 out of the 19 contacts have a call date filled in.
RikvdW 07/10/07	The ability to specify a general formula would be even better. In some cases I want to have the maximum, minimum, or average of certain fields.
rsimmons 07/15/07	I totally agree; I can't believe that there isn't a formula field available to total related list. Is an S-Control the only way to accomplish this task?
EW 07/20/07	This functionality was considered for the Roll-Up Summary field feature being released in Summer '07. The reason we opted against it was because of a usability concern: The example screen shot above poses no real usability issue because the related list only displays a handful of records. You see the "IRN Fee" field for every record included in the total. Simple, right? Now suppose you have 60 related "IRN" records - only 5 or 10 of which actually display in the related list. In this scenario, you only see a handful of records, but the total is actually a sum of 60 records. The total at the bottom of the column would look way out of line for the values displayed in the column. We put a prototype (that pretty much looked identical to the one above) in front of customers several weeks ago, and over 85% of them thought there was a calculation error on the page, because the total didn't match the sum of the values they saw. Now for the good news! With the Summer '07 release, you can display the sum of any number, currency, or percentage field from related records on the parent record, providing the relationship between them is a custom master detail relationship. So, if in your example above, the "IRN" object is master/detailed to the "Opportunity" object, you will be able to see total IRN fees directly on the opportunity record. You can use that sum field in workflow, validation rules, reports...pretty much anywhere you can use custom fields. You can even use filters to filter out child records you don't want. For example, you could see a sum of all IRN fees, but only if the IRN was "Raised By" a certain user. Slick, huh? -- Eric
WrogWrog 07/23/07	I would counter that by suggesting, you put the total fields ABOVE the column it is totalling. Since there would be a "Show N more » \| Go to list (NN) »" statement at the bottom of the list, it would be apparent that the total related to more rows that were shown; clicking on "Go To List (NN)" would then show all the rows, with the total fields still at the top (of course!). Whilst I think the alternative solution of "rolled up fields in the opportunity record" has its merits (I voted for that too!!), those roll up fields would NOT be visible if the user selected the "Go To list" option to show all the rows, would they?

Christoph_K. 09/27/07	RW, does this mean in Winter08 we still can't create a rollup summary field for all closed one Opps at the account level? I guess that would be very helpfull to easily identify and categorise A,B,C customers. Like also the Info on the amount of hours spend on cases at the account level would be a very important figure. why do all nice and new functions mostly work for custom objects and very rare or late for standard opjects?
Kingsley 10/01/07	Miguel, you can create a new field on the parent object and select the field type rollup summary field. It should be easy to figure out from there on.

Matt_P 10/16/07	I agree with EW's comments above. I don't think this should be implemented as a related list only shows X records of Y available. It could confuse the user. It is better implemented as a roll-up field on the record.
dschach@modelmetrics.com 12/07/07	This is NOT always possible in Roll-up Summaries, as RuS is limited to parent-child, and cannot involve a grandparent relationship. Therefore, if two objects are M-D, and totals are desired on the master AND the grandfather, nothing can be done.
TimMadigan Feb 27	Kingsley - we need to go beyond the simple Total and be able to total based upon product groups (e.g. FAMILY). We all spent forever building out our products with Family and other grouping details and it is crazy that we cannot do roll-ups or created report-type reporting off of them.
Christoph_K. Feb 28	How about adding the information of numbers of records that belong to this calculation in brackets? this would make clear the situation of the sum: like 250,-$ (4 of 12) for example
