Email plugin for Mozilla Thunderbird
Outlook Edition 2 looks like it was coded in about a day :-) So how about a plugin for Mozilla Thunderbird? Anyone else out there use Thunderbird?

We're in on this. Are there any developers out there interested in coding this? Quote us a price.
Additionally, if the demand is there and the development price is reasonable, who is in? How much would you be willing to chip in? Contact me: sonny.cloward@gmail.com. Sonny |

Yes, this would be huge. Not everybody uses outlook. Thunderbird has a much faster search and efficient interface, and unlike outlook, does not freeze up every now and then for no apparent reason.

Yes, this would be wonderful -- the built-in email abilities of the web client are pretty limited. Most of my co-workers use Thunderbird to read and reply to case email, and then separately use the web client to manage the case itself, dismiss email-related tasks, etc.

+1 for this.
Here's the main features of the Outlook plugin as described at http://www.salesforce.com/products/office.jsp : 1. Allow users to communicate via the familiar Outlook interface 2.Embed Salesforce right into Outlook 3. Capture critical customer email in Salesforce with a single click in Outlook 4. Ensure no customer service issue falls through the cracks 5. Reduce email clutter by allowing users to log only necessary emails\ I'm mostly interested in #2 and #3 to link webleads information to the appropriate objects in SF. |

Thunderbird being cross-platform, that would nicely solve the issue of Mac and Linux users being left out of the Outlook plug-in.
Personally, that would make a huge difference in the Salesforce's user experience for me. |

Mozilla's eMail client Thunderbird is an open source client that is way cool and can be integrated many ways. It's not a kludge like Outlook - slim - fast - flexible and is in my future. Has many user selectable add-ons, extensions and themes. See http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/ for more information.

I have been using Thunderbird for over two years now and just started using Salesforce.com about a month ago. Last week, I switched to Outlook, for the first time ever, to take advantage of the ability to enter e-mail correspondence directly into contact records. I have to say that switching from Thunderbird to Outlook has been like switching from a sports car to a school bus. Way too bulky and not at all intuitive. This plugin would make my work with Salesforce.com a much more satisfying experience.

Hi all. I'm planning to work on this now and am wondering if a read-only address book data source is sufficient for the initial release. Alternatively, read-write might be possible without too much work, though it depends on how it's architected. Outlook Edition has a lot of internal complexity due to two-way synchronization, and I'm wondering if direct editing of Salesforce.com data within Thunderbird is okay so that this plug-in doesn't have to synchronize and reconcile changes from Salesforce.com with Thunderbird's built-in address book. I'm thinking of how LDAP works in Thunderbird, but with write capabilities. Of course, that would prevent modifications while offline, though contact data can be locally cached for performance and offline use.
I'm wondering what features are desired in a Thunderbird plug-in for Salesforce.com. I'm thinking initially that contacts and leads in Salesforce can appear in as cards in their respective address books and that accounts can appear as lists in the "accounts" address book. Or, should Salesforce be one address book with leads and contacts mixed in, perhaps with a "Leads" list to help differentiate leads from contacts? Please let me know what to modify, add, or delete. Thanks :-). I plan to begin architecture and experiment work tomorrow while I gather requirements through this IdeaExchange page. --Steve Lawrance A long-time Thunderbird user (since the first version) |

I think the most important features and the best place to start is the functionality to upload sent / received / outgoing emails to salesforce and to create cases directly from TB. I would be very happy with just those features and consider any address book syncing a bonus. I don't know much about development of either TB extensions or about how salesforce integrates with Outlook Edition but I have a development background and would be happy to help.
It looks like sonny.cloward@gmail.com would also like to be in on this (see above post). Thank you so much for lending your talents to this cause!! |

What davidgbeck said. Anything involving address book syncs is a bonus for me. The main thing I miss from the Outlook edition is the ability to add emails to SFC directly from the mail app. If the extension did just that I'd be thrilled.
You can reach me at chrisod@gmail.com if you need beta testing help, etc. I have no coding skills bu I am a very advanced user and know how to back up my system before I start beta testing software :) |

Feature Wish List:
1. Syncing of email in T-bird's Sent folder, but only if recipient's email address is in Salesforce's contact database. 2. Synchronization of all Sent email in Salesforce to T-bird's Sent folder (no more bcc:) 3. Must work with POP and IMAP servers 4. Syncing a subset of T-bird's address book with Salesforce (don't want all of T-bird's address book in Salesforce) |

Please please please get a plugin for thunderbird, as soon as you can. Thanks, Jonathan. |

How about the same sort of integration that's been done for Outlook, but for Mozilla's Thunderbird instead? Today, if one of my users needs that sort of e-mail integration, I have to
a) buy a copy of Outlook b) do a deskside visit c) install the salesforce plug in. Since Thunderbird is open source, perhaps saleforce can even deliver a setup package that includes installation of the salesforce plug in. Thanks! |

As users move to less restrictive e-mail clients, the need for this type of flexibility is going to become much more necessary. There are many users in our org who are using programs outside of Outlook to manage their e-mails, tasks and calendars that currently cannot utilize basic SFDC functionality.

A number of new businesses are now using Open Office instead of MS Windows, as the software is free and offers very similar functionality. When searching for an e-mail client to replace MS Outlook, a polular choice has been Mozilla's Thunderbird.
I was suprised to find that SalesForce.com has not yet integrated their e-mail synchronization with Mozilla Thunderbird or other e-mail clients. This seems to be a logical next step: to expand the e-mail integration to other e-mail clients. I think this would greatly expand the usefulness of the SalesForce software for those customers who are not using the MS Office Package. |

iHance has a product that logs emails into Salesforce.com in almost any environment, the have explicit instructions for Thunderbird. It has two advantages that I see.
1) It looks like a catch all for all email environments 2) It can be set to automatically log emails to leads, contacts, cases and opportunities. (They give you an email address you can forward to or bcc. If you set it up so ALL emails are bcc'ed or forwarded to it checks salesforce.com to see if that email address of the email to be logged exists. If it does it logs it. If it doesn't it deletes it. That will save a sales team a TON of time. Pretty cool. Here is a https://www.ihance.com/flash/appexchange/automate/finalaa1.html Here is the listing on App https://www.salesforce.com/appexchange/detail_overview.jsp?NavCode__c=&id=a03... |

This is a great idea. Our company, and many others I'm sure, would love to free ourselves more from Microsoft in general and Outlook in particular. We've used Firefox for years and think it's a great browser. We're still hanging with Office 2000 because the cost of moving to Office 2007 is prohibitively high.
I wish this project could be structured proceed in several releases, adding extended functionality like address synching later, but would provide basic email capability ASAP. |

What Im looking for is:
1) The ability to synch my Thunderbird(TB) calendar(Lightning) with tasks and events into Salesforce(SF) and back 2) The ability to synch my TB emails back and forth with the SF accounts so that when I look at a contact, opportunity, Lead, Account, etc. the message and the RETURN Email is posted to the specific record. Right now I send using SF and paste the response in to a completed task (very annoying) 3) Use/access of templates and uploaded files etc. within TB 4) Psynching of TB address book with SF address book with all the fields that have been set within my record (not sure how this would work but would be very interested in this ability) 5) ability for the TB to synch to my Blackberry(BB)with the SF psynch That in a nutshell is what would make me feel warm and fuzzy inside |

I created a trial account on salesforce.com solely to vote and post to this thread ... Full Thunderbird integration would be a killer feature for my company and make the decision to switch to this service a lot easier. As we migrate away from the Microsoft lock-down, web-based services are the logical step forwards. A Thunderbird add-on/plugin would also enable us to drop internal support (IT) for Outlook, which is the source of many an IT headache. Thunderbird is the most popular email client in our environment, and it is growing to compete with Outlook in the same way that Firefox competes with Internet Explorer. Mozilla recently(-ish) announced the launch of Mozilla Messaging, a newly refreshed major effort to push Thunderbird and its companions to the level of success achieved by Firefox. Calendar integration is also required. This would be with the Lightning add-on to Thunderbird (see also the Mozilla Sunbird project for their stand-alone implementation). Mozilla will be producing an upcoming release of Eudora, which will use the same engine powering Thunderbird. An add-on to Thunderbird/Lightning would therefore work in Eudora. Thunderforce looks like a great solution, but there does not seem to be any recent development (looks like it lost all momentum in Fall 2007 after missing its August release target). Assure us you're coming out with a Thunderbird add-on this year and you'll win our business. My company is not alone; others will come, too. |

This idea is FANTASTIC and would be a huge help to us as we're moving away from Outlook and Microsoft for many reasons.
