Select Distinct Expression in SOQL

We really need a "Select Distinct" expression in SOQL.

jester Feb 19	ContactId is already unique. You need to realize that salesforce is object oriented, rather than viewing it strictly from a SQL-based relative perspective. You never operate on a value without in the context of an object. Which are distinct by their very nature.
AlexCRMmanager Feb 19	Jester, you're not thinking about the records in their REALTIONSHIPS to one another - sure, Salesforce isn't a full RDBMS, but it is still a relational data store - distinct object IDs can still show up multiple times in the foreign key field (Lookup or Master-Detail relationship) of another object, either in a one-to-many or many-to-many join. It would be immensely helpful to be able to do a "Select DISTINCT ContactID From Case Where Priority = 'High'", or something like that. The fact that the records stored in an object always have unique keys within that same object isn't relevant to this discussion. Can you demonstrate a way using the current SOQL version to get output identical to what the statement above would provide if SOQL did have a DISTINCT command?

nita_ghelani Apr 9	It's good idea as while doing report by group by,some case we don't need duplicate information and want disticnt count inside object.
PerGeert Oct 15	What I need to do is something like this: Select distinct Manufacurer__c, ... from Product2 where ... Manufacturer__c is a picklist on Product.
jtyar_thambi Oct 20	I also think that this feature is a must. It's very cumbersome and process intensive to manually select a distinct record on an object. It makes custom application slow by not able to get distinct records. Surely SF is OO but still we are using it as a data store.
