Setting up autoresponse emails to new records created in custom objects

We use salesforce as our recruitment system. When we get new applications in, I'd like to be able to send out auto-emails to external people by setting up a workflow. Currently we can't send out emails through this method to non-salesforce users.

WaldenPacific 05/10/07	We will be using Salesforce to manage workflow also and will need to be able to send notices to external people to notify them of completion or need for task. These are not people who I need to have access to the whole system - j ust notifications of milestones met, or activate for task or whatever. This would make your system absolutely complete and PERFECT for us.
APW 08/08/07	With new Summer 07 workflow features you should be able to use workflow to send emails to an external distribution list (up to 5 names) and/or the email address on a custom object.
TravisB 08/10/07	With Summer '07 you can now use workflow to trigger email to a Contact's email address as well.
eiphnoula May 15	BUT can you a trigger an attachment from the object?
