Lookup Dialog Search - need to search on more fields

Need the ability to search on more fields in lookup dialog searches. For example, we have several customers with more than 50 locations. With only being able to search by 'Account Name', the first 50 results are displayed with a message asking to narrow the search, which is not possible since they all have the same account name.

Why not search the same as using the sidebar?

C-Stance_Joel 09/11/07	It would be nice to be able to expand on the list of fields searched for all of the objects from the lookup dialog. When searching for an account via another object you can only search for Account Name and Account Name (local) - this just isn't enough - we should be able to determine the fields searched or have it search just as sidebar / advanced search is done.
MonkShack 09/15/07	This is definitely a problem when using lookup for custom objects. Currently, the lookup only searches on the Name field. It would be great if there was flexibility built into both the standard and custom objects that would allow admins to set the fields to search for each individual object (custom or standard).
sparky 11/08/07	Very big +1. As MonkShack stated, this is especially a problem for custom objects, and even more especially a problem for custom objects where the Name is an autonumber field. The autonum is almost never meaningful, so searching on it doesn't help much.
ghallettkp 11/27/07	it would also be nice if you could drill down through an object based on a drop down list - for instance, I'm going to have Projects with a drop down list of Business Unit. I would like my users to be able to select the appropriate business unit and then only the valid projects would appear. I'm also going to see if there's an idea somewhere here that would allow you to filter out items from the lookup (for instance, I would want completed Projects filtered out).
jmao09132007 11/28/07	Many of the names of my custom objects are only serial numbers. It would be great (and also the only sensible way) to search by designated fields or every text field in a lookup dialog.

For example, I have a custom object that relates to Cases. When you go to relate it to a case by using the look -up field, it only allows you to search by case number. This goes for other lookup fields as well. Salesforce needs to set up a way to search for things like Opportunities by the Account that is associated with it rather than the opportunity name.

As an example, I'd like to be able to do a lookup on a contact, but be able to enter in an account name and have SF return all contacts that would match the account name. Or perhaps even further refine it by typing in account name and state in the contact lookup to return all contacts with matching account and state.

There are problems associated with this; - The primary key is not unique - The primary key is not comprehensive enough to use as the search string - Some organisations have thousands and thousands of records which they need to scroll through. This is particularily a problem with custom objects and with organisations that want to search against more than just the primary key.

JaneD Jun 18	Merged Comment originally posted 04/01/07 This is exactly what we require. Our business has offices in different states where the product offerings differ. For example the Campaign Source field is a single field and only searchable by name. We have over 650 campaigns running over three major divisions which we are currently trying to manage using naming conventions. If we choose to add on additional offices (which will result in additional compaigns) we will not be able to support this using the the current setup and there isn't currently an alternative.

We found (very recently) that by enabling external record identifiers that these also get included in the sidebar search.This was a huge help to us as we use account id's different than SFDC. Still it would be nice to select which fields we would like to index in the future.

martha_seneta Jun 24	I'd love having this capability so we could enable people to look up Accounts using the dba (doing business as) name -- which is captured in a custom field -- rather than just the official name.

jamiencontonio Sep 5	This would be very important to us. We have many customers with long names and acronyms (especially on the government side). It makes sense for us to enter the account name spelled out; but, have a separate field as the acronym. The standard search should search both fields; but, does not and we can't modify it. It seems people have been aksing for this functionality for well over a year now; but, it is not getting any attention. I propose this functionality be added to the current Setup \| Customize \| Search, please?
