Universal Picklists
It would be fantastic if we could create our own custom "Universal Picklists", like the Industry picklist that is synchronized between Leads and Accounts. It would greatly streamline administration and data quality management, especially for organizations with extensive customizations of Salesforce.com.
It would also be great if you could extend the standard field picklists like Industry or Lead Source to custom objects, to preserve the synchronized picklist values from the standard objects on the custom objects as well for data consistency.

I believe some other posting asked for this. Anyhow, fully agree that the concept of Globale picklist would be valuable. We have zillions of lists of country and states in Account, Contact, Lead objects. We also reuse the Product Family list and Competitor list multiple times |

This would be great!! I currently have to maintain vertical/sub-vertical dependent picklists for leads and accounts. Keeping them in sync when I add/change several items is a fair amount of work. |

This is similar to my idea: Global Fields which are available to all records . Global fields which would allow any field type to span any entity. http://ideas.salesforce.com/article/show/43238/Global_Fields_which_are_availa... |

it also would be great if we could make the picklists dependant on fields in another tab like case fields dependant on Account fields etc |

We could use this Feature Today...we have several Custom Picklist Fields that are exactly alike but had to be created multple time because they are on different Objects. The ability to use the same Picklist Values across Objects would be great! |
|
watsonjl 03/26/07 |
Don't just limit this to standard objects. The way this should work would be that you could have a list of Global fields - both Picklist and regular. Then you should be able to add them to any object. I have one picklist field - a custom field called Program, which I've had to add to all of our Ojects since we share our SFDC instance across our entire company, and we have multiple businesses & even subbusinesses using it. The Program is one way to differentiate in reports and view so you only see your stuff (as the Administrator). |

Shared Picklists
When adding a picklist, it would be helpful to have the contents of the picklist be available to be shared. As an example, I have a picklist for a lead and have the same picklist available as a contact but I need to copy and maintain two separate lists. Having the contents of a picklist available to be share with make the picklist maintenance much easier.

We would love to have picklists that can be used across multiple objects but only need to be administrered in one place, like the Salutation picklist on Contacts and Leads. Such picklists could contain:
- involved employees that are not SFDC users - Review status (e.g. "confirmed","in review","unchecked") - Language - Timezone - responsible Line of Business (e.g. "New Accounts", "Named Accounts", "Pre-Sales") |

Not unlike 'Lead Source' being consistent across Leads, Contacts, Opportunities. Great idea, but challenging to implement in EE and UE, where multiple divisions are using the same picklists, with different values. Oooh....

Simple example mailing addresses on different objects that all need a Mailing State Code Picklist - not only want one domain of values but also want to be able to reference the value of one such picklist to update an instance of another to the same value in a workflow rule or formula field.

Yes !!! It is such a pain right now in situations where we have a long picklist that appears multiple places. Even if one is mapped to the other, you still have to modify each pick list separately.

If SFDC looked into this topic a little they would see that there have been numerous ideas posted that are directly related. Search "mapping fields" and you'll find a few.
Why that is the community sites are not set up in the same format as SF’s own case/help? Hum, I wonder if SFDC used the same format and pick lists as they do for client cases, and applied that throughout their user communities wouldn't they be able to analyze/report on ALL cases, ideas, concerns... when they can define the criteria they might have better, and accurate data to assist clients. Wow, how powerful is that! To me, (from a global view) it looks like SFDC has taken the exact model that their clients pay them to solve, and they’ve recreated the issues and obstacles for themselves (and their users). I plan to send the following comment to a few people at SFDC. If you know of anyone that I should send this to please pass along email addresses. Thanks, Karen. |

Administer one picklist but use it for different fields
We have a few picklists having identical values (list of softwares in our market): current software of an account, previous software, competitors,...etc.
Right now, any update has to be done on each picklist, so the idea is to have one master picklist, represented in various fields. So the picklist values would be independant from the fields they are used in. I know we could use a custom object, but then we loose the record type features + picklist dependencies. (It's a common feature of Saleslogix, so why wouldn't be one in sfdc?) |

Picklist values should be able to span entities
We should only need to set up a picklist one time. From then on we should be able to use it from any entity.

Pre-defined picklists that can be used across objects
Allow us to set pre-defined picklist values that can be used in different objects in our instance. A great example would be Country lists. We should be able to create a country list, then in several objects (wherever we need to pick a country) we should be able to link the picklist field to that pre-defined list. Also, these fields are dynamic in that if we update them they are updated on all the objects that use them. That way we can have consistent lists for common things in all the objects of our application and updating them would be MUCH easier.
Could just have another Setup field like Multi-currency, only this would be picklist definitions. We could have as many as you have room for. Then when it's time to define a picklist we either pick one of our pre-definitions or we do it on the spot. Exta bonus points if you can define a new pre-definition from the field definition screen. That is to say, say you didn't know you needed to pre-define the picklist, and you enter all the values, but then you think, man, I'm going to need to use this other places. SO you click a button, a popup pops up to ask you the name...voila! |
|

Ideed, this would save so much time and effort when updating a picklist. For example we have an account manager picklist that appears in several objects which is updated regularly. |

How about an option next to a lookup field that converts the lookup values to a picklist values? This would allow not only the full capability a custom object/fields but also improve user experience to pick values rather than lookup. Lets call it 'hybrid lookup' or 'hybrid picklist'. |
|
AlexCRMmanager Mar 5 |
@hpKOONJ - I already have another idea asking for "picklist lookup" fields. Here is the link: http://ideas.salesforce.com/article/show/67560/Picklists_For_Lookups_To_Other... |

As a new user to SF I have found it so frustrating regarding the inability to have universal picklists. It is a basic concept for a sales person to want to know what product a lead is intetested in for instance, and have it recorded correctly. Having a picklist that simplifies this process and maitains data integrity as you as you convert to a contact should have been one of the most fundamental design principles. At least make it easy to export a picklist from one what I will call "orphaned" picklist and import it into anothor picklist would be helpful. I've spent two days trying to discover how to do this in your help files to no avail. |
|

Why is this not in the list of ideas under consideration when it has been voted for so many times? |

Our current workaround is to create lookups to custom object tables for any shared picklists we have. This makes for a clunky UI. Shared picklists would be the perfect solution for us. |

Global Dropdown Fields
A feature I always loved in SugarCRM was the "Global Dropdown" style fields. Salesforce needs a way to create a dropdown in a general location, and use it on multiple pages.
For example, it would be nice to be able to have a dropdown field containing all of our Support Staff's names, and then be able to use that dropdown on Cases, Opportunities, and Leads, without having to have a seperate dropdown in each location that has to be maintained. |

Universal Picklists
Universal picklists that could be used and maintained across account, lead, opp, contact etc. objects.
Maintaining a dependent picklist that has several hundred values is time consuming - needless to say maintaining same list manually in 4 places is frustrating and not near robust. |

Being able to have what is presently a lookup, but have it function as a picklist (with the dependent fields and other capabilities that picklists have as well) would be extremely helpful... I run into this almost constantly

I fully support this idea - In our organization, we're using the same picklist such as company code, region, state/province picklist in many SF tabs and maintening those identical picklist is a pain and a huge waste of time and leads to some inconsistencies. We absolutly need this kind of object to be available ASAP !

This highly impacts Data Integrity for mailing lists, territory management, conversion, etc.
This should be a no-brainer especially for State and Country fields. You should be able to have picklists and use them on each object. |

It would be easier to allow us to clone any field (picklist or other) and associate it to a given object. This would be extremely useful when setting up Lead fields and recreating them in either the Acct, Opp or Contact objects when you want the values transferred upon Lead conversion.

I think it would be cool if you could use the same pick list in multiple objects. That way if you have a pick list in multiple objects that needs to have the same options you don't have to worry about changing it in all the objects.

A picklist, especially the multi-select Picklist, should be able to reference a set of records based on user defined criteria ie Products where Status equals Active. I have a Multi-select Picklist in a number of places where Users can select a Product. When a Product changes, i have to go and add it to the list manually. The available picklist options should update automatically. |
