Add more account hierarchy functions for parent/child accounts
There isn't much real functionality around account hierarchies. It's obvious that Salesforce.com wasn't really designed for real global account management where a company has many subsidiaries with many account managers.
For one thing you can't report on opportunities owned by an account hierarchy. You can report on opportunities that share a single parent account -- BUT the parent account itself's opportunities can't be included in there.
It gets even worse if an account is the child of one account and the parent of another account. The odds of being able to ever get a global picture easily fade even further.
When you have multiple account managers managing various subsidiaries in an account hierarchy, you can't give them read-only permissions to the opportunities in the other subsidiaries he doesn't own without really trying to be clever with sharing rules, or by assigning the sharing rules manually.
This could really get clunky for an account with dozens of subsidiaries, considering if you are like us, you might have many of these types of global accounts.

Well stated, I am having the same issue. Not sure what benefit the parent account was supposed to have without the ability to see below it having to be added to the child account team as well. We have a business development group that should only be able to see limited accounts across all regions but the current design lacks the ability to do so easily. I was hoping to create a parent child relationship but that just seems to fall short other than I can use it as a control tool - We really need the account teams from the parent account to inherit down to the child accounts and their opportunities. It just makes sense from a global perspective. |

I was just about to post this identical idea myself. Very well put!! We deal with lots of large companies, and we use the hierarchy of accounts extensively. It's disappointing how little functionality is available around this, however. It would be fantastic to easily be able to see all the opps for an account hierarchy, etc. It's very difficult for us to manage. Our customer BP oil, for example, has 50+ children accounts in several levels, yet it's very difficult to extract data regarding all the activity relative to ALL the BP accounts. There is one cool AppExchange app -- Yahoo Map Account hierarchy -- that demonstrates the value of the account hierarchy. I wish I new more S-control coding to tweak this, as it shows the potential of having good account hierarchy data in the system. |

I agree absolutely with all the above comments both from a reporting and security view. Makes you wonder why this has been omitted! |

Couldn't agree more. The hierarchy functions are not good and they NEED to be fixed. I added an idea that builds on this one a few weeks back. http://ideas.salesforce.com/article/show/10088511/Rollup_Summary_Fields_for_A... |

Parent Account should drive visibility to the Children
Why on Earth does selecting a Parent Account do absolutely nothing to provide visibility to the Child Account and its opportunities???? What is the point of having it there other than to see a simple hierarchy??.
I'd like to propose that SFDC enable automatic sharing based on the selection of a Parent. It would also be great (and logical) if there was a way to see all child opportunities under the Parent Account . . . but first things first. So, if I own ABC Corp and it's parent is XYZ Inc---I would expect that if I designate XYZ as the parent that its owner gets to see what I have in the system. Or at the very least there should be an option to enable that sharing automatically by default. |

I also agree as I am having difficulty at the moment as we are a financial services company and most of the time we have no direct sales but need to track the introducer of the account /opportunity and was hoping to use parent accounts however this is proving to be unsuccessful.

This should be a no-brainer, especially for companies that do work for the government, where every government agency has a structure of subagencies. It should be automatic to roll all the data from the subagencies into the parents.

Hierarchy Top Account should show information that "sub"-Accounts are linked to it
On the Parent Account there is no visibility that there are Accounts in the Hierarchy are linked to it. It would be brilliant this would be visible by let's say the View Hierarchy link changes is color if there are accounts linked to it or it's bold.
On Sub Accounts you see the name of the Account above but the other way you have no idea. And who clicks on view hierarchy just to see that there is none? |

Adding the suggestion that their be a sub account view in the hierarchy. I don't necessarily want all of the activity on the parent account to reflect all of the subs as that can make for an unusable view of the data (too much data) But a unique idenifier so that we can report on all of the activities on the account and its subaccounts would be great. Can't always rely on using the name.

Add "Related Accounts" related list to Account object
Today, if you lookup an account, you don't immediately know if there are any related accounts to it unless you click the "View Hierarchy" link.
To increase awareness of account hierarchy, I want to see a related list called "Related Accounts" that includes parents, children, grandchildren, and so on for all the accounts that have any relationship to the one viewed. The list view for Related Accounts should then have a way to designate the relationship of other accounts to the one viewed. The could be done by use of an icon or use of an indent of the Account Name, and/or the use of a Relationship field in the view. Hopefully related to this request would also be a visual indicator that can be added to search results views that indicates when a related account exists for the search results shown. In that way, the search results could be sorted with hierarchy so you know when relationships exist. |

Account hierarchy roll up summaries please
Great! We have roll up summary fields which allow us to summarise data from lower level objects. A big step forward, we all agree. But supposing the lower level object is the same as the primary one? I'm referring to account (and contact) hierarchies.
We would just kill to be able to total up the number of assets under an entire account hierarchy - we need to identify which accounts have a maintenance contract, but the assets which are (or are not) maintained may be at any one of a number of levels and branches within a given account hierarchy. Similarly, although I can summarise the value of closed opportunities under an account, I can't summarise that further up the account tree to the HQ account. This actually discourages us from creating any account hierarchy at all, just so we can report at account group level. Please provide some means of automatically summarising data from subordinate accounts. Can I be greedy, and ask if subordinates could inherit or "roll down" data from the higher level accounts? And of course, the same requests apply to Contact hierarchies too... |

This sounds very similar to my idea:

Yes, please! The lack of functionality around account hierarchies is one of my main beefs with SFDC at the moment. We rely on this functionality extensively, and it sucks that it is of little actual use.

Child account should appear in related list in the Account detail page
The child accounts of an Account should appear in the "Related List" of account detail page.
It makes it a bit difficult to access the related account via the "View Hierarchy" link on the account detail page. |

we have many parent accounts that have individual children. our contacts are typically associated with the high level parent account. as such, when those contacts use the SSP to file a case/support ticket, the case automatically gets assigned to the parent when in fact it needs to be related to one of their children. a "child account" picklist on the SSP log a case page, displayed for all accounts that have children, would solve this.
i believe this is a related concept. |

I second this. Our sales folks want to see at a glance the list of child accounts of a particular company. A related alternative might be simply to hide the "View Hierarchy" link for a company that is not a child or parent of another account. That way, a quick glance would tell you at least that the company has some kind of child/parent relationship, so a click would give you the necessary information (rather than having to check the hierarchy each time you view an account).
