Need a standard field in User record for Manager or Reports To
I'm guessing that most, if not all of us have a custom field in the User object for Manager or Reports to. What we need is a standard delivered field on the User record for that data.
The reason for this is that when it comes to workflow or escalation notification, managers may be part of the same role, yet you only want to notify the record owner's manager, not every manager in the same role.
A sub-benefit from this would be the ability to view your company org chart within Salesforce. While a role hierarchy may loosely represent an org chart, you don't want to get to the point of having a unique role for every person in the whole company.

You should check out prerelease, this is in the demonstration of Winter 07. Part of the approvals process work was creating a hierarchy field on the user which contains their manager. |

Thanks, that gets me a little farther. I setup the hierarchical relationship on the user record, but that still doesn't make them a notifyable person when I setup escalation rules. In the specific example of escalation rules, what I want is to not notify a user, but to notify the "field" of Direct Manager for the user, not a specific user to be selected in the esclation action. Each escalation rule needs to notify someone and I want that someone to be dependent on who the manager of the user it, not a specific person. (a variable if you will) |

I would like a similar thing, but use the User Roles. I should be able to make use of the Role structure for Workflows. A simple case would be to notify the User in the Role directly above the Owner or Record Creator. That way the Workflow Rules can be generic to the Role hierarchy of the organization instead of hardcoded to fields in the User records. |

Especially in Winter 07 - now that there is an approval process feature, wouldn't you want to have a way to make your manager the approver? All the documentation tells you to create a custom field to indicate the approver. But in most cases, its always the same person in relation to either the owner or the user. If not a standard field, some calculated field function to return the manager for a user or the owner. |

That's exactly my point, too. We've spent all this time building out Roles, and can only use them in very limited workflow actions. Why not make this available for the new approval http://ideas.salesforce.com/article/show/64476/Approval_Actions_Based_on_Role... |

Hi Rajaram, The initial submission requests a standard user level field that can be used in workflows while the comments expand on this idea and request using the role hierarchy in workflows and approvals. Which option is coming in Winter 08? Thanks. |

The winter release will include a standard manager field on the user record which can be use in approval processes. However, this is the just the first step in supporting email notifications to owner's manager etc. |
