Dynamic Sidebar Search (Coming in Spring '07)
Would love to have more powerful sidebar/advanced search capabilities, especially the ability to query using filters, record types, picklist values, etc.
For example, what if there were a customizable Search page layout, where you could select the type of record you're looking for (Account, Contact, Opportunity, etc), then place the most useful "filter fields" on that Search Layout? Imagine Record Types and Mini Page Layouts for Searches.
This might replace the inelegant trio of search bars currently needed to search Documents, Solutions, and Everything Else with a single Search function.
Or, what about indexing the data (including picklist data) to perform Google searches (like Google Desktop) on your instance of SFDC?

Great idea Drew -- It would be powerful to have a way of doing a "structured" search on any number of fields without having to save it as a View, in addition to the Google like search that exists today. By the way, Google has a add-on to their search appliance called "OneBox" that allows you to do an SFDC search right from your Google Desktop page...might be good to check out if your company has the Google Search Appliance for doing intranet searches: http://www.google.com/enterprise/gsa/onebox.html |

That would be a great addition to the program. Our consultants are used to using the Google search engine and would like for Salesforce to work the same way. The search appliance is a possible solution although it is quite expensive for some users. |

As jsherman said, we have a number of your suggestions planned for Spring '07 - Sortable search results give you inline sorting of search results by column - Inline search results paging so that results for other objects in search results are available and unchanged when you page through results sets - User-customizable search layouts, allowing you to choose what columns you see in search results - Filtering for search results so that you can further narrow the set of results returned to you (must be enabled by your administrator) - Sidebar Search dropdown that allows you to choose which object to search (must be enabled by your administrator) Thanks for the great idea -- keep them coming! |
