Rename standard tabs and fields (Winter '07)

We need to change the label on a standard field

HRearden 10/09/06	Though this sounds like an inane feature, it really would be nice. We have a lot of trouble with user adoption because features aren't named using our own corp lexicon.

EricB 10/13/06	I edited the comment for this request, since it was inconsistent with the title. I removed this text: "and edit the type of a particular field ('State' field from text to picklist)." That is a separate feature request. Also note that the ability to rename standard fields is part of Winter '07.
AlexLares 10/15/06	Ability to rename the FIELD LABEL (name showing up in tab) for standard fields -- But not the FIELD NAME (real name of the field in the database). That would be highly beneficial for a lot of users. Regards, Alex

alicbarry 01/11/07	I am very excited about this feature. May I make another request though? Since the underlying field is still the same as the standard couldn't we change the label BY PROFILE/RECORD TYPE. This way different business units can call a given field whatever is applicable for their specific need.

markbrown May 20	So I was about to post the idea below but this seems to be pretty close. However I cannot do it some maybe I am misunderstanding what Delivered means? How do I use the new feature? Idea: It would be great to have the ability to label the record type something else or create a custom field that does a record type lookup. currently on the Customer Portal I have decided the only way to create custom forms for different issues is to use record types however the term "record type" means nothing to my customers, so it would be great if I could label the field Request Type, Problem type or somethings similar they would understand. I also cannot give them help text to explain what the field is for like I can with custom fields.

mgeise Jun 9	from what I have found, you have to do it through the tab customization - try searching the help
EricB Jun 11	In the Setup area, go to Customize \| Tab Names and Labels \| Rename Tabs and Labels. Click Edit next to the standard or custom tab name with which your field is associated. This takes you into a wizard. Click the Next button if you don't want to rename your tab. The second step of the wizard shows all the field labels that can be overridden.
