Extended Mail-Merge: remove 100-record limit

Extended mail-merge is a huge improvement over the standard mail-merge, and would be really useful except for one huge problem: you can't merge to more than 100 records at a time.

Moreover, it's very tricky to put together your batches of 100, since when you move to each page of records in the wizard, it forgets all of the records you've checked off in the previous page.

What's more, this limitation does not seem to be documented anywhere that I can find.

Extended mail-merge works good! Now please graduate it from an experiment to a useful feature.

ryerkes Apr 14	We have changed the limit to be based on a formula that takes into account the size of the template and the number of merge records. The maximum number of records will be 1000. For an average template size (75K) the number of merge records will be about 500. Thanks for the good words on the feature!
sparky May 6	Sounds great, thanks! A couple of things I'm hoping you'll think about in implementing this: * fixing the UI so we can include contacts from multiple pages of the view * pre-calculation of record limits. The one thing that would be unfortunate would be if I selected 500 contacts, then attempted to merge, but the merge cut off at 488 because I reached a size limit. It would be difficult to retrace which contacts weren't included. So maybe the template selection should come first in the wizard, so you can calculate and tell me how many contacts I can select in the next step? Also, one other thought: * If server resources are the main issue here, I for one would be very content w/ throttling and/or chunking of the merge results. So if I wanted to merge 5k contacts, I wouldn't mind too much if the whole thing took 5 minutes to complete, and/or if you delivered the results in 5 separate documents/emails. That would be far less painful than having to run through the merge UI 5 separate times.
TimAlsop May 6	I agree with sparky. If I want to send 5000 emails, this should be possible, but saleforce should batch the emails and send when possible without causing any bandwidth or server resource issue. This approach would be better than providing any UI changes so that the saleforce customer has to split up the email distribution into batches. I compare this to a scenario of file transfer, where I might want to send a large file across my network. In this case, I would expect the file transfer software or the network transport software to break up the file into blocks so that the network resources can be used efficiently. I would certainly not expect the file transfer program to tell the user to split up their file, send each file segment and then join the files once received ... I know sending large number of emails is not same as sending files across a network, but hopefully this illustrates the fact that the "platform" should handle the use of resources, and not the "UI".
