Intellectual Property Rights- Code Protection

One of the major drawbacks of Salesforce is that the s-controls which we code are exposed to the clients, who if are resellers they tend to be at an disadvantage.
A partial solution that we can have by "Manage Packaging" our code in which we mode as much as we can on to Apex as then it is hidden from users.
With Visual force around , will it help us in sheilding our code from the users?
We have tried "Obfuscation" but it at times causes some issues. We would suggest Salesforce comes up with some in built API for hashing code.

I think one of the best things about Salesforce is it's collaborative nature, whereby people from all over the world can share their code triumphs and work together to create a better app.

I agree that salesforce's collaborative nature is great, but at the same time I can still see a place for providing developer companies a way of protecting their code if they want to sell their application on the app store. It's a bit of a double standard if salesforce doesn't provide the mechanism since I'm sure they wouldn't dream of releasing their backend code as open source to allow other companies to take advantage of their hard work and improve on it. As a result I think it should definitely be an option for developers.

My preference would be to have everyone open source all their code though :)
