Automatic Apex/Visualforce code changes when Field Name changes

When I rename a Field Name, if the Field Name is referenced in formula fields, these formulas are automatically updated to refer to the new Field Name. However, if Apex code or Visualforce pages reference the Field Name, I get errors and have to change the code/pages manually - and that is not easy to do. Instead, I prefer of a Field Name change causes the code or page to be updated like formula fields are updated automatically.

thecrmninja 10/21/08	Perhaps Visualforce or Apex can be adapted to reference a Field Code (which itself cannot be changed), thus, eliminating the need to have Visualforce/Apex finding every instance of a field name in a code and changing it. Or, maybe they can simply add a "Display Name" field that can serve as a label and be changed ad nauseum. Disregard, I am not well-versed in VF and Apex considerations.
TimAlsop 10/21/08	There is already a "Display Name" - it is called the Field Label. The Field Name sometimes needs to be changed. Anybody who has done any extensive application development on force.com using visualforce and apex will undertand the need for this feature.
