Roll-up fields using Date Keyword Criteria

In attempting to use a Date field as part of the summing criteria for a roll-up field, I've uncovered an oversight and/or bug.

Roll-ups currently do not allow any of the Date Keywords as criteria (eg: THIS MONTH, LAST MONTH), as referred in:

PLEASE SFDC, implement this function into the Roll-up field criteria !!!

paul_underbrink May 28	There is a practical reason for this limitation: the value of a rollup summary field is actually calculated as the child records are updated and immediately stored on the parent record. If you were to apply a date criterion to a rollup summary field, the value would become incorrect over time. At present there is no built-in way to re-calculate a rollup summary field based on the passage of time. As a work-around, you can employ this technique (assuming you are using EE or UE): Create a 2nd custom field on the child record, and use a workflow field update to assign the full value or zero, depending on the desired date range. Now create a rollup summary field using this 2nd custom field. Please note: With this work-around, you still need to consider the impact of the passage of time. Potentially, you can create a time-based workflow action to re-calculate the 2nd custom field when the date range expires.
diz May 28	Or just have a formula field on the child that calculates to 1 or 0 based on the month and roll up that sum.

I'm tracking software licenses that have an expiration date. I only want to roll up the number of licenses that are not expired. Can't just filter on the Expiration. So I'm going to have to set up some sort of time-based work flow to update a check box based on the expiration date. That I can filter on in the Summary Roll Up field. Lots of extra steps for something that could be simple.
