Improve the search engine

The current search engine within salesforce typically only searches the name of the records (Opportunity Name, Account Name, etc.). It would be very nice if the search engine could pick out the keywords anywhere on the record. For instance, on this image I have attached, I can search the project ID/Job number if I know it. However, if I wanted to search for the Old Job Number (2007-CDN26), the search engine will not pick up 2007-CDN26.

I think it would be nice if the search engine searched all fields within a record.

Jakester Mar 24	You have 2 things you can do to improve it with the existing system. The first is that you can set a field as an External ID field - it will then get indexed and automatically searched when you do a regular search. The other thing is that when you go to advanced search all the fields will get searched. Somebody has posted a way to include an advanced search on the sidebar so you don't have to first click advanced search, but I don't know where that code is right now. Hope that helps!
carlosatboartlongyear Mar 24	Jakester, Thanks for the tips! I set that Old Job Number custom field to an external ID and it worked like a charm. So, I guess I could go through each custom field and do that, but it would be a pain. But for now, I will do that on the most searched fields. I think we just get spoiled by that Google search engine. Thanks again.
carlosatboartlongyear Mar 24	Side note: Only 1 custom field on an object can be set to the External ID.
Heros Mar 24	To make the advanced search on the sidebar instead of regular search you need to contact SFDC Support. Ask them to turn it on for you. It is one of those hidden features.

anndavis Apr 18	My addendum: we have multiple custom fields per object, so it would be most convenient to have it search all fields everywhere.

anndavis Apr 18	Yes, Mr. Jorgensen, my apologies! I found the info in Help AFTER I spent hours trying to find info in the forums. We mistakenly assumed that in Advanced Search if you chose "Contacts" it only searched Contact names. And we all know what happens when you assume.....
jbeck@VCS Nov 11	Updated note: I was able to set more than one custom field under the opportunity to an External ID, this should help our search results tremendously.
